Symmetrical staircase with round-arched windows in the former district court in Düsseldorf, Germany

Two opposing staircases lead beneath a coffered ceiling to a central door, above which hangs a round, gold-framed portrait medallion. Tall round-arched windows with fine glazing bars line the room on both sides, filling it with even light. A narrow pool of water between the staircases reflects the steps and railings. The clear symmetry and massive columns give the room an official, almost sacred severity.
