MY HIDING PLACE
Retreats outside of space and time
Everyone needs a place where nobody follows them. As a child it was the cave under the table, later a room, a bench by the water, a path that no one else takes. MY HIDING PLACE is a series about such places at their largest: solitary houses in wide country, retreats that seem to have fallen out of space and time.
There is no distraction here and no noise, only the open country around you and your own thoughts. That sounds like peace, and often it is. Your breathing slows, time stretches, and things that were loud at home go quiet out here. But the silence has a second side. Stay alone long enough and you start listening to yourself, and not everything you hear is pleasant.
Solitude has many faces. It can give peace and quiet, but it can also unsettle you, turn you inward, at times frighten you. These photographs do not avoid that. They hold on to both sides of being alone, the freedom and the unease, and they do not pretend that one can be had without the other.
The houses in this series stand where you would not expect them. They are small against the land and hold their ground all the same, like a thought that will not leave. You want to go in, close the door and for a while be no one at all.
Whoever learns to be alone finds their way to themselves. MY HIDING PLACE is an attempt to make that state visible: the beauty of seclusion, the demand it makes, and the strength it takes to accept it.
