INDUSTRIAL GARDENS

Steel, concrete and glass were built to keep nature outside. Factories were fortresses of order, with roofs against the rain, walls against the wind and floors on which no blade of grass stood a chance. INDUSTRIAL GARDENS shows the moment nature comes in regardless.

It needs no force. A crack in the roof is enough, a window nobody closes any more, a winter that drives water into the joints. Then there is soil on the concrete, then a seed falls, then after some years a birch stands in the workshop as though it had been planted there. Ferns grow out of crevices, moss settles over rust, light falls through green leaves onto machines that once glowed.

The noise has died away, but the silence is not empty. It is full of life, only of another and slower kind. What once meant control and output and the beat of the clock becomes a garden that nobody laid out and nobody tends. It is finer than any park, because it is not trying to please anyone.

This series takes the side of that change. Not as a charge against what was built, because the factories fed people too and shaped whole towns. Rather as wonder at how gently and how unstoppably the green returns, as soon as it is left alone.

INDUSTRIAL GARDENS is about the reconciliation of two opponents who never were opponents. Metal and moss, order and wilderness, past and future come together here into one picture, calmer than either side on its own.
