Stone portal with a spiral staircase in an old villa in Piedmont, Italy

A richly molded stone portal with an oval heraldic medallion frames the view of a narrow spiral staircase behind it. Plaster has flaked away in large patches around the portal, revealing older, patterned layers of paint underneath. The floor in front of the doorway is covered with rubble and loose plaster. Warm light from the stairwell gives the winding steps a golden glow.
