Oval rotunda with a gallery of figures in an abandoned villa in northern Italy
An oval rotunda is ringed by an upper gallery on which ten stone female figures in crowned headdresses stand in a row. Below, slender columns with Corinthian capitals support the gallery level, with a round-arched passage opening at the center. Two narrow windows let light in from the sides, and the wall surfaces are plastered in ochre-yellow tones. The strict curve and the repetition of the figures create a solemn, almost theatrical effect.
