Quality and finishes

How a print by Sven Fennema is made, what sets the three finishes apart and what the lab guarantees for 75 years.

The lab

All prints are made in one of Germany's leading professional labs for fine art photography, which also supplies galleries and museums. Nothing is kept in stock: every work is exposed or printed individually after your order, mounted, stretched and checked by hand before it leaves the building.

Sven Fennema prepares the print file for every size himself. Cropping, tones and sharpening are tuned to the material, not to a screen. The print on your wall matches what the artist shows in exhibitions.

75-year colour guarantee

The lab guarantees the colour fastness of the prints for 75 years. The basis is the photo paper and the inks that museums and galleries use for permanent displays, and the lamination that protects the image from moisture and UV light. A poster yellows, a fine art print does not.

A tip for hanging: avoid direct sunlight, wipe aluminium and canvas with a dry, soft cloth, handle aluminium carefully at its edges and corners, frame fine art prints behind glass.

Limited edition

From 120 × 80 cm, the works are made as a limited edition: numbered and signed by the artist, with certificate. Mostly frameless on aluminium, as canvas on a stretcher frame or on aluminium behind acrylic glass, framed on request. The editions are small, 10, 5 and 3 copies per size, after which the work is no longer available in that size.

Limited editions are made on request. Name the size and finish on the work's page and you will receive a personal quote with price and delivery time. Open edition, limited edition, gallery edition

Packaging and shipping

Every work travels well protected and insured. Depending on the finish it comes signed directly from the artist by DHL; very large works the lab hands straight to a freight carrier, with signature and certificate following separately by post. As a rule your work is on its way 7–10 working days after the order. Delivery times and shipping costs per country are shown at checkout before you order. To Germany we ship free of charge from a goods value of €100.00.

Should a work arrive damaged, the artist replaces it without discussion. A photo of the packaging and the damage is enough.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a fine art print and a poster?
A poster is printed on paper. A fine art print is a true photographic print: the image is exposed onto light-sensitive photo paper in the lab and developed chemically. That gives finer tones, deeper blacks and a durability the lab guarantees for 75 years.
Which finish lasts longest?
All three are made for decades and carry the same colour guarantee. In everyday life the canvas is the least sensitive. Aluminium is the stiffest and has the highest print density, but needs care at its edges and corners. The fine art print behind glass stays untouched the longest.
How long does production take?
Every work is produced individually after your order. It usually leaves the lab after 7–10 working days; add the delivery time by DHL or, for large works, by forwarder.
Can I order another size, another finish or a frame?
Yes. The open edition covers the four common sizes up to 90 × 60 cm. All finishes are also available in various frames on request; larger sizes, framing, acrylic glass or other papers you ask for directly at the work, and you receive a personal offer.
What does open edition mean?
The open edition is not limited and can therefore be ordered right away. From 120 × 80 cm, the works are available as a numbered limited edition with certificate, signed by the artist.
Can I cancel the purchase?
Yes, within 14 days of receipt, including prints made for you. You bear the return costs; everything else is in the cancellation policy.
