RISE UP

Monumental staircase with a colonnaded gallery in the former Gruzya sanatorium near Gagra, Abkhazia

Two mirrored staircases with marble balustrades lead up to a gallery carried by a row of slender columns with capitals. A frieze-like band of rosette motifs runs along beneath the ceiling, and an arched niche sits at the center of the lower wall. The blue-grey marble on the stair walls shows fine veining and weathering. The strict symmetry of the layout gives the space a dignified, almost museum-like presence.
