A wide staircase with a white, turned balustrade rises before a deep blue wall whose paint is peeling away in large flakes. A massive column with a Corinthian capital supports the ceiling beside it, and an enfilade of bare rooms opens up in the background. A tall window casts warm light across the steps. The space still feels stately despite the decay.
