Vaulted arcade in an abandoned villa in the Marche region, Italy
A row of slender white columns supports a barrel vault that recedes in even rhythm toward the back of the frame. The ochre walls have lost much of their plaster, showing stains and cracks, while the floor is laid with a diamond pattern of light and dark tiles. Bright daylight opens up at the far end of the passage. The perspective heightens the sense of length and stillness.
