VANITY HALL

Stair landing with painted sky and a round-arched window in a palazzo near Turin, Piedmont, Italy

Above a stone staircase, a coffered vault ceiling curves overhead, while the walls on both sides are covered with an illusionistic sky painting of clouds and columns. A tall round-arched window lets warm light fall into the stairwell, making dust particles visible in the air. A wrought-iron railing lines the lower step, and a stone balustrade accompanies the flight of stairs. The painted expanse of the walls creates the illusion of an open sky above the staircase.
