Abandoned Villas

Few places tell as much as an abandoned villa. The grand piano still stands in the salon, the wallpaper holds what is left of the frescoes, and light falls through the shutters onto parquet nobody has crossed in decades. In Italy alone, thousands of such houses stand empty, left behind by divided inheritances, rural exodus and earthquakes, often with the complete furnishings of their last inhabitants.

Sven Fennema has photographed these houses since 2008. The works on this page come from several series, above all HABITAT and ELEMENTAL, and show villas and country houses in Italy, Portugal, France and Spain. Every work is available as a print in three finishes and three sizes, direct from the artist.
